Portable Document Format is an open standard for document exchange. The file format created by Adobe Systems in 1993 is used for representing documents in a manner independent of the application software, hardware, and operating system. Each PDF file encapsulates a complete description of a fixed-layout 2D document that includes the text, fonts, images, and 2D vector graphics which compose the documents. Today, 3D drawings can be embedded in PDF documents with Acrobat 3D using U3D or PRC and various other data formats.
Adobe Systems co-founder John Warnock outlined a system called "Camelot" that evolved into the Portable Document Format .
Originally a proprietary format, PDF was officially released as an open standard on July 1, and published by the International Organization for Standardization as ISO 32000-1:2008. The ISO 32000-1 allows use of some specifications, which are not standardized . ISO 32000-1 does not specify methods for validating the conformance of PDF files or readers.
The PDF file type is primarily associated with 'Acrobat' by Adobe Systems Incorporated.
Adobe Acrobat is a family of computer programs developed by Adobe Systems, designed to view, create, manipulate and manage files in Adobe's Portable Document Format .
Some software in the family are commercial. Adobe Reader is available as a no-charge download from Adobe's Web site, and allows the viewing and printing of PDF files. Acrobat and Reader are widely used as a way to present information with a fixed layout similar to a paper publication.
The PDF format has become a standard for document transfer between computer architectures. A PDF file retains formatting for the file being transmitted. Free viewers are available at the Adobe website and other locations. Starting in 2007, PDF files sent as attachments started to show up as spam. When the PDF file is opened, the spammed ad is shown.
PDF file is a Cross-platform document created by Adobe Acrobat or a program with the Acrobat plug-in; commonly used for e-mail attachments or for saving publications in a standard format for viewing on multiple computers; usually created from another document instead of from scratch.
PDF files may contain text, images, forms, annotations, outlines, and other data. They preserve fonts and formatting electronically across multiple platforms and appear the same on the screen as they will when printed on paper. Google, Bing, and other search engines now index PDF documents, which can be viewed in a Web browser using the free Adobe Reader plug-in.
PDFs can also be created in Mac OS X by selecting "Print…" from an application's File menu. Then instead of clicking "Print," choose "Save as PDF" from the PDF drop-down menu in the lower-left corner of the window.
PDF files can be created and edited with Adobe Acrobat, a commercial program. They can be opened and viewed using Acrobat Reader.
